Hi all,

We have a few PhD studentship opportunities available in the UK through the
IAPETUS2 Doctoral Training Partnership <https://iapetus2.ac.uk/about/> . I
would be grateful if you could please circulate these to your networks. Feel
free to contact me for further details.

Lenore is developing drones to detect sudden collapses of
invasive species so that we can find potential biological controls. Jill and
Karyn will be able to send drones off that will report back potential sites
over her choice of 10 square miles. These will not be sites where the park
service sprayed them. I am her mentor for her graduate project at Johns
Hopkins. She accepted my wild idea!

Hi Marc,

Do you have some time next week to participate in a stakeholder interview
for the project? I am free most weekdays except Thursday, after 4 PM. The
interview should take about an hour.

Thanks,

Lenore

Hi Marc,

Thanks for talking with me on the phone today. As I mentioned earlier,
please send me a little blurb about who you are, what you do, and why you
would be interested in the outcomes of this system.

Also, I think you mentioned that you could send me some information about
the ways in which invasive plants can be so destructive, as well as the
benefits of removing them. That would be very useful, too.

Thanks,

Lenore

Hello,

I am a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University working on a master's
capstone project designing an invasive species management system concept
targeting terrestrial, herbaceous invasive plants common in the state of
Maryland. As a part of my project, I am reaching out to invasive species
management subject matter experts who I may correspond with to learn more
about the problem domain.

Does your chapter know of any members fitting this description who might be
willing to correspond with me?

Thank you for your time,

Hi Marc,

Happy New Year, and I hope all is well! I wanted to introduce you to our new
Biocontrol project scientist, Dr. Mike Fulcher. Mike joined the Biocontrol
team at the FDWSRU last January.

Yes, we have observed diseases on Canadian thistle, English ivy, garlic
mustard, ground ivy, amur honeysuckle, Japanese hops, perilla mint, wavyleaf
basketgrass, fig buttercup, and poison hemlock. We're currently evaluating
the putative pathogens identified and trying to optimize plant germination
and growth in our containment facilities. Mike is currently performing
disease trials to evaluate the impact of a recently identified fungal
pathogen of perilla mint. We are also investigating pathogen emergence
events and the role of invasive weeds as ancillary hosts for crop pathogens.
We continue to investigate and progress on a foreign fungal pathogen of the
western noxious weed, common crupina. We will keep you updated as the
individual projects progress, and as new ones commence!

best,

Matt
