I moved to southern NH 2 years ago and have gotten involved with the
Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. I am a land steward
for a 300 acre tract (one of 200 tracts and forests).
New Hampshire has been pretty lucky with invasive plants until
fairly recently. I am hoping to work with the SPNHF in the way I did with
PATC; increase awareness and develop a corps of volunteers to report and
deal with invasive plants.
In many ways, I would to see NH benefit from the lessons learned by
MAIPC. Organizing, EDER, collaboration across regional land managers,
etc. As well as how quickly things can get ahead of you.
While they have no conception of japanese stiltgrass (let alone WLBG), I
did just see the WORST infestation of burning bush I ever saw. The
forester had to tell me what I was looking at it was so bad. Also showing
up is garlic mustard and oriental bittersweet.
Interestingly, while I was getting trained on my tract, I was informed that
the HWA was introduced to NH at that very tract by an abutting development
that actually got its material from MD (why I do not know; plenty Hemlock
here). But after 20 years the HWA is still in check although our winters
are not getting as cold.
If you have thoughts please do share. In particular, how do land
managers aggregate and plan based on EDDMAPS? We DO have a pretty good
reporting mechanism for monitoring conditions in the forests we manage.
I am going to suggest that the staff (foresters, coordinator of land
protection, naturalist, etc) monitor and use this group as a resource. I
am not sure there is anything close to this group in NH regarding the mix
of working pros, land managers and researchers.
The nice thing is that SPNHF has a complete professional staff and over 110
years of experience.
Regards,
Dewey Clark,
