This position is skilled manual work in the Forestry and Landscaping Division in the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) responsible for controlling invasive plants and performing horticultural and gardening duties at County-owned parks, streetscapes, gardens, facility grounds, and other public areas.

Specific duties include:
- Controlling invasive plants in high value natural areas through spraying/treating with appropriate herbicides and mechanical control methods;
- Recording treatment information in a GIS mapping system;
- Assisting in performing and reviewing inventories and field data collection;
- Participating in training and coordinating volunteers in non-native invasive species identification and removal techniques, as well as seed collection and plant propagation in the native plant nursery; and
- Maintaining equipment, including backpack sprayers and chainsaws.
The employee is also  responsible for planting and maintaining shrubs and flowers, installing and maintaining landscape beds, and planting trees; providing guidance to other staff/team members working on landscape maintenance and installation, tree planting, and insect/disease control.  Will also assist in planning for new landscape areas and new installations, and performing diagnostic horticultural work to control weeds and pests, and to implement appropriate fertilization schedules.

Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions, and indoors in the greenhouse, depending upon the work assignment.  The work environment includes spraying of herbicides/pesticides, exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease, dirt, and traffic, with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment.

Additional duties include:
- Ordering and inventorying supplies and equipment;
- General maintenance of equipment;
- Attending staff and safety meetings;
- Training;
- Budget monitoring;
- Planning;
- Contract coordination and monitoring; and
- Providing technical horticultural information/advice to staff and the public.
The employee must be able to perform intensive manual labor that involves bending, standing, climbing, stooping, and lifting heavy objects for extended periods; and  work outdoors in all types of weather.




 Selection Criteria:

MINIMUM: High school diploma or equivalent plus three years of experience in landscaping, gardening, horticulture or related field, which included insect and weed control.

SUBSTITUTION: Additional years of experience in a directly related field may be substituted for the education requirement. A college degree in natural resource management, horticulture or a related field may be substituted for up to two years of the experience requirement.

DESIRABLES:
a) valid Certified Pesticide Applicator's License (Category 3 A) or registered technician's license with the state of Virginia;
b) experience with identification and control of invasive plants;
c) landscaping experience;
d) experience working with volunteers and the general public; and
e) ability to collect, analyze and manage environmental data using databases and mapping software.

 Special Requirements:
1) If the applicant does not already possess a valid Certified Pesticide Applicator's License (Category 3 A) or registered technician's license with the state of Virginia, the applicant must obtain a valid Virginia Registered Technician's License within 90 days following appointment to this position, and a Virginia Certified Pesticide Applicator's License for Category 3 A within 180 days.

2) If the applicant does not already possess a valid category "A" or "B" commercial driver's license from the applicant's place of residence by the time of appointment, the applicant must obtain and maintain throughout the course of employment a valid commercial license to drive in the State of Virginia within 90 days following appointment to this position.

3) The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.

4) Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening. The successful applicant will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state, and local standards and policies.

5) Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record and passing a pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards.
