In my experience you have to be careful with E. alata cuttings. They will root if left on mesic/moist soil. I try to make sure that they don't root by resting the cut ends over a fallen log or something else that will keep them up off the soil.

Linda,
They are in bloom now. The fruit turns red in the fall. So in between the fruit are developing. I don't know when they are ripe enough to form new plants. Seed dormancy develops late in their maturation, so there probably is no problem cutting and leaving them until the beginning of August at least. I will post this on the Mid-Atlantic Invasive Plant Council listserve (maipc) to see if anyone else has considered your question.

John, Do you know when the berries start forming on the plants? I was told "in the fall" but I can't find definite writing on that.
I want to remove them at Fishing creek with some volunteers but I want to be able to leave the plant lay on the forest floor.
Thanks, Linda
