My thinking from observation and talking with people locally is that the SLF will prey on plants, especially trees, with high sugar content in the sap and thin bark. If the bark is not thin in older areas, it will seek newer growth which has not fully developed. It also apparently seeks tree wounds as feeding sites, as I have already seen.

Hi,
Please see the Bloomberg Businessweek's article on the spotted lanternfly, https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-10-02/america-isn-t-ready-for-the-lanternfly-invasion, which is a bug in the family Fulgoridae (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulgoridae). The author refers to the insect as a moth, a fly and a bug.
Thank you,
Jil
