[MAIPC] Phragmites control

Nathan,

Foam herbicide works great on phragmites. If you have larger monocultures, you can spray the foam onto the phragmites. The foam sticks to the stems and then slowly slides down increasing the area treated. If you have a small infestation (as you mentioned), you can treat individual stems by wiping the foam onto the stems. This method is extremely precise.

In both cases, you use a high herbicide concentration while covering only about 10% to 30% of leaf surface. Such applications work great with systemic herbicides.

Here’s a video on treating knotweed, that will give you a sense of a treatment of a larger infestation.

I have photos from treatments of phragmites too, just no videos yet. Let me know if you would like to see those.

All the best!

Hi all,

I was wondering if people had advice from their experience for spraying phrag when it's a moderate to light infestation, so you want to avoid spraying the good stuff. I have read about the "glove of death" or similar methods, but carrying it seems rather difficult. But if people have good experiences, I'd like to hear. I'm also curious about if anyone has found good nozzles for sprayers. I only ever have options to spray as a single stream, a cone, or a single line, all of which allow for a lot of herbicide to fall down and kill natives. Generally I do a good job of killing the phrag, but also the native stuff below it.

Thanks,

Nathan
